India ranks 19th in terms of overall export of merchandize and 12th in terms of overall import of merchandize when compared to other countries. With more trade liberalization deals to be signed by the pro-business Indian Government, there is plenty of opportunities for establishing a successful import or export business. To undertake an import or export business, the Entrepreneur must have a strong understanding of all documentation pertaining to import or export transactions. To being exporting or importing goods from India, the business or individual must obtain an Import Export Code or IE Code from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. IE Code can be obtained by the business after obtaining PAN and opening a bank account.

What is IEC?
IEC is a ten digit unique identification number, a license is issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India, issued to person engaged in Importing and Exporting of goods & services from/to India. No IEC means no benefits from DGFT.

Features of IEC Registration in India
  • The code is a primary proof that Company is indulged in Import & Export.
  • IEC is compulsory for making foreign bank transfers.
  • Exporters claim revenue with IEC number only.
  • IEC Code issued by the DGFT for the lifetime validity so it’s a just one-time cost of the registration.

Steps to be followed in IEC Registrations
  • Go to Government Website (dgft.gov.in)
  • Login for IEC online registration
  • Enter Pan Number
  • Email ID & Mobile Number
  • Enter OTP generated on email id & Mobile Number
  • Update Master Data
  • Applicant’s Name
  • Applicant’s Address
  • Preferred Activity
  • Enter Bank Details
  • Other relevant Information
  • Make Payment & submit Application to DGFT
  • Online Generation of IEC Number
Documents Required Online Application for IEC requires:-
  • Applicant’s Address proof:-
  • Sale deed in case business premise is self-owned
  • Rental/Lease deed in case office is rented
  • Latest Electricity/Telephone/Mobile Bill on Applicant’s Name
  • NOC, in case premises are not on Applicant’s Name.
  • Cancelled Cheque bearing entity’s pre-printed name or Bank Certificate
